Abstract
The views on the role of mathematical methods in the empirical research of modern Russian sociologists of the early twentieth century are considered and compared with each other. Sociologists of the past are researchers who were engaged in the collection and analysis of social data mainly within the framework of zemstvo statistics. The comparison is carried out in three directions: we consider the construction of a sample, the analysis of frequency tables of different dimensions, the study of statistical relationships between features (the choice of the compared methods of data analysis, of course, was a problem, since during the twentieth century, as is known, the number of corresponding approaches has grown immeasurably). It is shown that sociologists of the past were more conscientious about their work in the sense that they did not reject the need to use formalized approaches, but carefully implemented them, analyzing the models embedded in the methods and comparing them with their own ideas about the essence of the problem being solved. This is often forgotten by modern sociologists, believing that pressing a computer button will solve a sociological problem for them.
