The compendium of rules of conduct for Buddhist monks and nuns known as the Vinaya also contains narrative material of an explanatory nature – a series of stories about ascetics obtaining alms. The value of these stories is that they present a variety of everyday situations which reflect the relations between the ancient Indian monastic community and the society surrounding it. The article attempts to identify the problems causing concern to the compilers of the Vinaya-piṭaka and to show how the various relationships between city and monastic community contributed to the formation of a new social hierarchy. Interest in this issue came to the fore particularly in the urban environment, since it was there that the discrepancy between social status and material prosperity was felt most keenly.
