Abstract

The work is an analytical review of social democratic and post-capitalist concepts that interpret the economic reality of Western countries in the XXI century. An attempt by a part of political scientists and economists to return to the welfare state and Keynesian politics, despite a convincing criticism of neoliberalism, seems doomed to failure. The likelihood of another option in this direction – the requirement of progressive taxation – is also in doubt. The nature of the relationship between inequality and economic growth is debatable. Egalitarianism can both slow down and accelerate economic growth. Post-capitalist concepts appear to be both more radical and more original. The discourse of the transition to a network society allows a plausible interpretation of the diffusion of power, the rise of entrepreneurship and the creative class. Also significant is the concept of “negative sovereignty” in the 21st century. It shows the impossibility of liquidating the state through military-political measures taken by neighbors. Negative sovereignty is also accompanied by problems in tax collection and the impossibility of providing a weak state with social security and other public goods. A radical version of left utopia, including the struggle for unconditional basic income, involves the elimination of wage labor, increased automation, and the nullification of the previous work ethic. This option is inclusive, encompassing wide stratum of the population. However, reasonable doubts remain regarding the reality of its financial and economic opportunities
