Abstract

The article discusses the process of formation of the ethnocultural community of the Métis in Canada which have occurred from marriages of fur dealers with Indian women at the beginning of the 21st century. The métis nation represents a separate ethnocultural community in the Prairies. With varying degrees of intensity, they were involved in both Indian and european cultures in agricultural, hunting, and fishing practices. Discriminatory policies of the federal and provincial authorities of Canada after the defeat of the Métis in 1870 and 1885 led to the marginalization of this group in the 20 century. In fact, over a century, the Métis in Canada have been erased from the legal field. Only since the 1960s, french-speaking Métis under the auspices of the National Métis Union is beginning to declare themselves, first at the provincial and then at the federal level. The most critical milestone in the history of this community was the inclusion of the Métis along with the Indians and Inuit, in Article 35 of the Canadian Constitution in 1982. Nevertheless, today in Canada, the debate about a "real" Métis origin is still essential.
