- Abstract
- This article is the result of toponym Valaam etymology research, known as the name of the island and archipelago, located in North-Western part of Lake Ladoga. In monastic sources, modern popular scientific literature interpretation of the name is given as a derivant from the Finnish words, names of heathen God of the Slavic pantheon Veles - Volos, biblical names: Valaam and Baal. In author opinion, an island Valaam was since olden times known to the habitants of Priladozh’ya as an ancient heathen pagan temple, adopted Valaam and getting a modern form in course of time.
