Abstract
The article is devoted to the history of the formation of the spelling rule "Spelling of roots with alternating vowels e and and": in chronological order, various explanations for their spelling are considered, noted in spelling textbooks beginning in 1755. Recorded when and by whom the rule was first formulated as it is is given in modern reference books.
