- Abstract
The article provides different versions of the origin of the expression «elementary, Watson» which is actual for the modern Russian language. It establishes three different interrelated meanings of this expression and determines the character of the evaluation broadcasted by these meanings in various types of speech. The article concludes that the main role in its popularization and active use belongs to the cinema and anecdotes.
