Abstract
The results of interviews with experts from the Russian Foundation for basic research, studied using the cognitive mapping method, are presented. The issues of criteria and approaches used in evaluating applications for research projects are considered. The opinions of experts on the value aspects of scientific activity and on the organization of science in Russia were clarified. The authors came to the conclusion that in the study group there are coinciding ideas about the criteria for evaluating applications, about the separation of basic science and applied research, and about ways to improve the situation in Russian science.
