Abstract
The article deals with the black fi gured cups and fragments in the collection of the State Hermitage museum, which can be regarded as works by the Griffi n-bird painter, in his manner or by an artist close to him. The painter was named after the Griffi n-bird, which often appears on the vases by this painter and derives from the Corinthian painted pottery. Identifi ed by J.D. Beazley, the Griffi n-bird Painter was the main subject of one of the books by H.A.G. Brijder, who dated the painter's career to 560-530 BC, described all the typical features of the shape and decoration of the cups painted by him and listed the painters of his circle. There are two types of the cups in the museum, which can be attributed to the painter and his circle: the Siana cups and Little-masters' cups, both produced in the time of the painter's career.
