Abstract

The article examines the factors having an impact on the transformation of ethnic identity among today's Western Mongolians. Drawing on the own field research data, the author discusses a variety of causes that led to the emergence of territorial and local ethnic identities as significant markers among the people who used to think of themselves as a socialist
