- Abstract
- The article presents materials uncovered in the course of the archival study of correspondence addressed to Professor N.I. Il'minskii, who was a prominent educator and missionary working in Kazan. There were a surprising variety of interlocutors, including ethnographers and educators, corresponding with Il'minskii on issues that concerned the cultural development of diverse peoples inhabiting the Russian Empire. The author argues that Il'minskii's ethnographic activities were very important in the context of intellectual efforts directed at the preservation of specifi cities of cultures, peoples, and local nationalities of the Russian Empire.
