Abstract
Dmitry Chizhevsky’s correspondence with Mikhail Karpovich preserved in the Bakhmeteff Archive (Columbia University, New York) throws light on some aspects of the Harvard period of his biography (1949–1956). The essay considers in particular the events preceding the scholar’s invitation to Harvard, especially the scandal which had broken out around Chizhevsky due to the intrigues of his colleagues at the Marburg University. Furthermore, it also considers Chizhevsky’s interesting and at times brusque opinions about some American Slavists, his conflicts with the colleagues at Harvard and finally the motives of Chizhevsky’s return to Europe.
