Abstract
In the article, the literary strategy of Karamzin after his return from the journey through Europe is considered. Kheraskov occupied a special place in it: he not only supported Karamzin in the emerging conflict with a circle of Moscow freemasons, but also became an active participant in his publications. In a review of the novel "Cadmus and Harmony", Karamzin sought to formalize allied relations with Kheraskov on the basis of his new literary and aesthetic program, which allowed to consider the topic of the "inner man" so important for the Masonic circle, not so much in the context of esoteric literature "for the initiated" as in the framework of "elegant literature" related to this literature, but not dissolving in it and possessing its own capabilities.
